Space Harrier! The game that I wanted to play in the arcades but never had the courage to get in that big chair and play because I knew I would die in 10 seconds and probably trip getting out of the chair.
Sega did it right with this game and Outrun. There's just an ethereal atmospheral aural sensaural quality to the art, graphics, animation and music.
I loved the environments, even the Sega Megadrive's Space Harrier 2 environments. Music was great, yes.
Liked how you re-interpreted the boots with some sort of lift and propulsion system in them. Originally they were not like this, but it would be hard just hanging on to your flying gun the whole time, hehe! You give me some ideas... (I might be 15 dA pieces away from this, yikes!)
Yeah the boots, I thought that boring boots would be too unfun, especially since they are right in the face of the viewers (I guess he coulda had a piece of gum stuck to them or something). So I did my little modification.
Shenmue had an arcade you could go just to pass the time, but the aim of the game was solve the case of your fathers murder
It had exact replicas of Space Harrier and Super Hang On, and the sequel added Afterburner and Outrun
They also both had capsule toys you could collect, a lot of them being characters from Sega games including Space Harrier, Sonic, Virtua Fighter, Alex the Kidd and Ristar
Thanks! Yes it's basically just dodge and shoot, but it's the kind of game that just has all the right elements. Pure geek magnet is what I'm trying to say, hehe!

I spent loads of money on Space Harrier in the arcades and then I spent loads of virtual money on it in Shenmue on the Dreamcast
My favourite game of that era though was Afterburner, and that had such an awesome cabinet
Looking forward to yours!
Haha, Shenmue had some mini-game built into it, eh?
Afterburner, that was awesome too. Man Sega had the industry cold on those types of games eh?
It had exact replicas of Space Harrier and Super Hang On, and the sequel added Afterburner and Outrun
